What is Smishing

What is Smishing?

Smishing is a type of fraud that uses text messages (SMS) to trick you into sharing personal, financial, or security information. The term combines “SMS” (short message service) and “phishing,” which is a broader scam tactic where attackers pose as trusted institutions.

How Smishing Works

Fraudsters send a text message that may look like it’s from your bank, a government agency, or a well-known company. These messages often:

  • Claim there’s a problem with your account
  • Ask you to click a link to verify information
  • Urge you to call a phone number to avoid a penalty or secure your funds
  • Contain urgent or threatening language

Once you click the link or call the number, you may be asked to provide sensitive information such as:

  • Your online banking login or password
  • Debit or credit card numbers
  • Personal ID information (like your Social Security Number)

This information is then used to commit fraud or identity theft.

How to Spot Smishing Messages

Look out for these red flags:

  • Messages from unknown numbers or short codes
  • Spelling or grammar mistakes
  • Suspicious links (often shortened URLs)
  • Unexpected requests for personal or financial details
  • Claims that your account will be locked or charged if you don’t act immediately

What to Do if You Receive a Suspicious Text
  • Do NOT click any links or respond.
  • Do NOT share any personal or banking details.
  • Report the message to your mobile carrier by forwarding it to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Contact your bank directly using official phone numbers or through your secure banking app.
